Timios Prodromos Monastery, Stemnitsa

The buildings of themonastery perched atop the rocks certainly stir the senses. Together with theLousios river gorge, it’s a scene that speaks volumes of the serenity, dedication and endeavour that goes into monastic life. The monastery was founded by ascetics  in the 12th century. At the entrance tothe monastery, a fountain dating back to 1748 will quench your thirst, before on the old door itself you notice bullet holes, an unwelcome ‘decoration’ from the Orlov revolt.  More uplifting are the frescoes of the 16th century adorning the small Katholikon and the rocks in front of it. More than ten monks currently live in the monastery, which has been dubbed the “Great Cave” of Arcadia.
